Was there a Factory Navigation system for a 2001 Denali?
Or, would I have to retrofit an '03-'06 radio, and bezel? And, if so, what all would be needed?

Only option for a 2001 is to go aftermarket. Double din would be the way to go, but you will have to get the 03 bezel and bucket just like you mentioned.

No objection to changing bezel, or radio/hvac bucket. If I knew what DD radio and appropriate extras to get.

You may want to consider an aftermaket nav system that will be more easy to upgrade. I have a 04 and its hard to find an upgraded nav disc. Last time I found 1, it was $150. Plus if you want to add an Ipod, you'll need to buy another piece.

As Scott alreadry mentioned, oem is not an option for the OP.
