2003 denali steering problem.

Hey there I got in my truck this morning and it had to sit outside last night . It is about 2 degrees out. But the problem is when I turn left the steer wheel won't turn then you pull on it harder and it's like it gets over a notch and turns alittle then locks up again and pull it harder and it turns further. I'm stumped can it be the immediate shaft or the steering gear? Thank in advance

In my 03 LS I had a groan turning left sometime, tried a couple things, but didn't fix. Then one day it was like I lost power steering turning left only. It was the steering gear box. I replaced myself and it was right as rain again. It happened at about 130k miles.

Usually it's either steering box or the power steering pump.

cold weather is ******* the PS pump until the oil warms up.

I once had a Honda Civic that would intermittently loose power steering. I looked up changing the PS pump and it looked to be a real pain, so I first took a turkey baster and puled out all the old fluid, and replaced it with straight Lucas PS fluid, and I swear it TOTALLY fixed my issue and ran the car for 3 more years like that without one issue. I would give that a shot, for like 10 bucks......why not.

How old is the steering fluid? If it has moister in it, you could have some ice in there somewhere.

Yep,moisture,2 degrees just started after cold snap,I'd gamble to say ice.cheapest fix as well.I'd try that before buying a gearbox and it happening again.
