So my 8.1 has 130K, no mods. I'm the third owner, was sold to me out of Canada. Some good amount of rust on the undercarriage but nothing to alarming.

Recently I hear a loud Ticking/Rattle right at 1800RPM that will continue if I hold it there. I'm assuming it's on of two things, lose heat shield or exhaust leak. I'm also getting a noticeable ticking sound when I accelerate and let off.

I have also lost 2mpg. Rough idle as well. No codes. I'm going to put it up in the air this weekend to have a look but I'm here to ask for guidance as well. Thanks in advance.

I have three friends with the 8.1 and every one of them has had the exhaust manifold leak so i bet that`s your problem as well. For the rough idle i would start with cleaning the MAF and the throttle body and if that doesn`t work, Plugs and wires.

2nd exhaust manifold leak. I've had to replace the bolts twice so far. Change to a 180 t stat, it will help with oil consumption.

So it turned out to be an exhaust hanger that would only Rattle in that RPM range. So random. Now that that noise is gone all I hear now is the ticking, all the time. Sounds like it's coming from the lower end of the engine. I also have developed a strange winds up sound when I first start moving in gear in the morning. Starts low in frequency then winds up to high over a 3 to 4 second period. Only does it once when cold in the morning, any thoughts?

No exhaust bolts are broken off but I'm not 100% sure it's not an exhaust leak. And my piston slap is louder than ever.

Have you checked the bell housing for cracked flex plate or loose bolts? The squeal noise might be pulley. Remove belt and spin them by hand and if ones bad you will notice it
