Looking for a little help out there! I have a 2006 tahoe lt with autoride. Truck has 50k on it and i am the second owner, bought 2 years ago. I am wondering how other trucks ride or perform on the highway. I feel like the steering is loose, truck gets caught in ruts/groves, and vibrates at highway speeds 70-80mph. I have had the intermediate steering shaft replaced and tie rods. Brought into the dealer(mistake!!!) and they suggested new front shocks, about $600 each!!! Would a after market steering stabilizer help.....any thoughts or suggestions?? Truck is all stock, tires are still in good shape.

Thanks

Tires could be in good shape in regards to tread, but they could be old and hard which will cause vibration. Check the tires as well as vehicle alignment and tire balance.

I just put a set of Belltech Shocks on mine. Check with TONY (NORCALSS) @ 415-519-2432
Your dealer is crazy, I paid 575.00 INCLUDING a 2" rear drop kit from Belltech. Unless of course Auto Ride Shocks cost more.

I do not have any vibration issues with mine.

get down there and take a look. jack the front wheels up, i did them one at a time. take the wheel off and shake the caliper/hub assembly from 3 o'clock to 9 o'clock, and 12 o'clock to 6 o'clock. if you dont see any play, get a pry bar and see if the balljoints have any play if you use alittle more leverage. when i did this i had a good bit of play from 3 to 9. so i followed the play up the tie rods and to the centering shaft. after looking for like 5 seconds, it was plain to see that the pitman and idler arm were super loose and leaving play in my steering. this was of course after i noticed improper wear on the tires

Thanks guys, i will try jacking and taking tires off. The truck is all stock, and i have had it at the dealer twice in 2 years for this problem. The autoride shocks are about $600 each from dealer. I was considering dumping this 2006 for an 08 or 09, but cant seem to find any with the options in want and mileage for under $35k. Dont wanna spend that kind of money only to have my wife and kids destroy the interior!

Anybody have any luck using an aftermarket stabilizer?

with stock tires/wheels you dont need a stabalizer. I would look at all the joints in the front steering and gently use the prybar like suggested. Look over the rims and see if you can see where a wheel weight cam off, that could cause the high speed vibration. Or, have the wheels rebalanced. I doubt the shocks would help much, but it couldnt hurt.

Wide tires do tend to grab the ruts in the road, and these vehicles dont exactly drive like a sports car.

thanks, the wife might be just as messy at the kids........ha! I had this thing balanced,aligned...etc twice a year along with tire rotations. I like the tahoe, but just cant seem to figure out the steering situation. I will try the recommendations above.

I had an offer of $18500 on it last week, though like i said, looking at the 08 & 09 lt or ltz models, people are crazy. My tahoe has the 2nd row buckets, which i love. Tuff finding this option, as they are few and far between.

I agree, prices are crazy and with 50K on yours, you would be hard pressed to find anything close to what you have.

Fix the sterring issue and you will have a great truck.

I love my '06 and can not see myself get into an NNBS Truck soon, due to the prices.
