Today I bought a 2008 Tahoe Ltz after selling my 2002 Yukon mid last year. I test drove it and had no issues. But after I drive it home, my wife wants to ride. So we go out riding around. When we got almost home I noticed a rattle of sort coming from what seems to be the front left wheel. It seems to only do it while turning right then a very short time after going Straight. Then after a few seconds it stops. When I turn right again it returns. Turning left it makes no noise. Anyone heard of this?

I would get that thing up on some jack stands and try and wiggle the left tire by grabbing it at 12 & 6 and see how much play you have in it. If it only makes noise when turning right and going straight but not when turning left, classic symptoms of a bad wheel bearing. I would also check your sway bar links to make sure they are still intact. Could have one that is broke or lost a bushing and is rattling.

Ok I’ll try to give it check within a day or two. How bad is it to replace a wheel bearing? The only one I ever had go bad was in a car I had years ago but it made that thing vibrate pretty bad. This Tahoe still rides smooth and seems fine don’t even resale feel In steering just hear it mostly and it’s not real loud, if the radio is on you wouldn’t hear it

How many miles on your vehicle?

Hopefully it’s just a bad sway bar link.

Swapping out the wheel bearing is pretty straight forward. If you have some basic mechanic skills shouldn’t be too hard.

When you jack it up to inspect it grab at 12 and 6 and 3 and 9 and see if it has play when you wiggle it. You may also feel a rumble in your hands when you spin it or maybe even hear it. Check the brake caliper mount area, with wheel off, to be sure all is snug and no brake pad hardware is loose as well. Like Wade said, hopefully just a sway bar link. Look all over that wheel area for anything that looks suspicious. Good luck. Or you have a loose turn signal housing bearing on the left front. That would be very rare though.

Bearing isn’t that hard to fix. I just did mine last Saturday in my garage. Only special tool I had was an air impact. Basic socket set and tools will get it. Will need the axle but socket. I forget but I think it was 32mm. Tough part about it was beating it out of the knuckle for about 15 minutes. Go to 1aauto, they have repair vids. Mines an 08 Ltz also. Just bought it in June.

Ok guys thanks it’s raining and cold today and I don’t have a garage to put it in hopefully it’ll be dry tomorrow and I can pull it apart. The Tahoe has only 129k miles on it.

If the wheel bearings have never been changed the 129k is great mileage out of the one on the left and right. Do both if you change one out. It will likely come soon.

Ok. So only way to tell if that’s it for sure is jack it up and see if the wheel has play in it?
