It has been said that GM is going start producing them once again, but the cost to purchase one will be much higher than having one converted. The ones coming from the manufacturer to my knowledge will be a dedicated system, meaning you run only on CNG, and dont have the option to run on petrol

$12,000 will buy me 4,000 gallons of gas at the current prices in my area.

This 4,000 gallons will carry me 60,000 miles.

The price of the conversion is why CNG will never catch on in the USA until it's a last alternative to other fuel sources.

By the time gas hits $8 to $10 a gallon, the conversion kit will be $25,000 as well.

CNG just isn't cost efficient because of the upfront conversion costs. The only people who have afforded it so far is cities and counties. But of course they don't care because the taxpayer is footing the bill.

You also have to take into consideration the tax incentives, the greater distance between oil changes, and if youre keeping your vehicle for more than 60k miles before getting rid of it.

On the suvs it is a bit of a pain due to the limited space for the tanks. This would cause you to have to fill your cng tanks more often, but on the trucks were installing a gge equivalent 21 gallon tank. And as far as the fuel economy goes, i dont know what the problem was with their vehicles or kits, but if done right you get the same or better fuel mileage and performance

Ok, but what is the point of spending 10-12k on a conversion kit to get the "same or better" mileage and performance?? I would want guaranteed substantial gains in both categories to even consider spending that kind of $......

I have a friend who did the conversion on his new Burb he loves it. Of course, he received $6,000 in grants, plus the remaining balance from his company. We have CNG stations all over, I've seen a bunch. Of course, we also have one of the biggest CNG companies in the US headquartered here. I also see lots of Chevy and GMC conversion trucks. A few a day.

I'm new to this whole topic, but isn't the "Gain" from natural gas that it doesn't harm the environment the way a gasoline engine would? If the MPG doesn't change a whole lot, seems like the only "advantage" would be environmental.

Well here in Cali I've only seen one and its about 30 minutes away. Doesn't CNG damage your engine on the long run?

Dear GM:

You dumb-asses need to get off this half this and half that fuel setup you are fixated on. Forget your half gas/half electricity fixation. Forget your half gas/half compressed natural gas fixation. Go with one source of fuel for a vehicle!

You morons need to come out with vehicles that run on nothing but compressed natural gas, and a Tahoe is a perfect vehicle for the switchover. Your next problem is how much you want to charge for something that can run on compressed natural gas. $11,000? Are you stupid or what? I'll answer my question: You're STUPID.

The Wall Street Journal had an article a week or so ago that used $5,500 maximum as their estimated cost for making a vehicle run on compressed natural gas. Not $11,000. And the payoff for the average smuck using $5,500 is much longer than you goofs come up with assuming an $11,000 cost increase. Quit playing games and quit lying! You're screwing the public with your cost increases and you're screwing the public with how little time the payoff will be.

Make a vehicle run on something like compressed natural gas only. Get you costs in line with reality. And get off your dual fuel fixation.

There, I feel better already.
