Just make a short hoist shaft to remove the spare

I'm not sure what you mean.

There is a plastic tube that goes from the hoist to the bumper access hole. The hole itself is covered by an external cap on the base (tahoe/yukon) bumpers, and hidden inside the hitch cover on the esky/denali/late ltz bumpers. The regular esky hitch covers are wider than the one of the twin exhaust bumper.

The way to lower the hoist is by sticking two jack rods end to end in there and another one perpendicular (T shape) into the plastic tube so as to be able to twist the hoist. Even if one somehow cut the plastic tubing between the bumper and the hoist so as to access the hoist from behind the bumper with a shorter shaft (gigitty), there's no space under there to put the perpendicular rod to twist the hoist.

Don't get me wrong, I'd LOVE to hear a solution if there is one.

Nah, it still looks like the best way to do this is to ditch the spare and replace it with the tire repair kit that the hybrids come stock with.

I just don't see how a functional spare can be retained under the truck where it belongs.

You're most likely right and long term I'm pretty sure most would not be happy with the spare taking up cargo space in the rear

Okay, how about if I cut the bumper to make a hoist shaft access

Well, you'd have to try to replicate what the setup is with the base rear bumpers:



Eek, you'd have to really trust someone to try to do this to a brand new esky dual exhaust bumper ... one false move and the whole thing will look like poop. Plus it's not as simple as simply cutting a square out ... the little cap on those bumpers clips on so that it doesn't fall off.

This is where one would have to be EXTREMELY detail oriented in planning and executing such a mod.

Wouldn't you do it like an esky bumper since it still has a hitch cover?

You cant ... the hitch cover in the dual esky bumper is much narrower, it's the width of the part of the regular esky bumper that sticks out without the side panels.

Honesty, if my choice were to start trying to cut to modify a brand new bumper, I'd feel more confident cutting two exhaust gaps at the corners to fit the dual tips in the regular esky bumper (which I could then retain the spare as is) that to try to poke a hole in a new dual tipped bumper.

Or, even I would rather ditch the spare for a repair kit than to do either of the above.

So do the new 2012 esky's with this bumper not have a spare tire? There is already someone on the Cadillac forums who has done the upgrade but I didn't see him talking about the hoist to lower the spare.

Relocate the access hoist.
