2016 Yukon Denali - Died over weekend

Hey Guys -

Had to get my Yukon towed over the weekend. Here was the situation. Saturday morning, starts right up. Go to daughter's soccer game about 5 min away. There for about an hour. Come back to the truck to leave and it won't start. Just flashing lights and clicking. Some indicators light up, like stabilitech system, rear gate, battery protection mode. Tried to jump it but no good. Tow company came out and tried as well. We also disconnected the battery and tried again. There was no indication that my battery was low these last couple days or anything out of the norm. Been starting and running fine.

Dealership calls me this morning and says the battery is dead, that I need a new one and really need to do a full tune up. Obviously it's pricey. $260 for battery and like $950 for the tune up. Does this all make sense to you guys? I went over the course of events with him and said it didn't necessarily add up to me. But maybe I'm wrong? He says their machine is indicating that the starter and alternator are fine.

I have 95k on the truck. I don't recall when I had a new battery installed but I want to say it was around 50-60k. I'll have to check the records. I'll be out of warranty around 98k.

Sounds like a battery to me. Sometimes batteries do what you described. Work one minute, not enough juice the next to crank over the engine. Especially if you are unsure of the age. Did you look at the date on the battery? Not sure why you still couldn't jump it.

Yea. That’s why I was questioning it since It went from perfectly fine to not even being able to jump it. I’m going to pick it up soon so I’ll check on the old battery.

The tune up is not needed until you reach 100k. You could actually drive it to 150k without changing the spark plugs. The spark plugs, wires and tuneup should cost $420 at most. I would change the battery from AutoZone with the Duralast AGM platinum. Autozone will change it for free. The battery costs $230. The reason why I am telling you AutoZone is because they are nationwide and when your battery goes bad you could pull into any AutoZone and get it done in 15 minutes vs going to the dealer and leaving your truck there or waiting the whole day. What if your battery goes bad on the weekend or if you’re on vacation. You will have to wait for the dealer to open and wait forever for them to fix it. I made the mistake by letting the dealer change my battery. 8 months later it failed on a Saturday. I had to depend on someone to come jumpstart my truck every time I wanted to drive it on Saturday and Sunday. On Sunday I just went to autozone and bought a Duralast platinum AGM battery just to be done with it. The dealer wanted me to leave my truck there and come back in a few days. The dealer always tries to sell you stuff you don’t need. Just read the manual and go by the recommend schedule.

Because it's completely dead, it sounds like the battery may have had a plate collapse and shorted itself internally so to speak.
As other have stated, battery replacement is pretty easy. You can pick up a decent battery at Wal-mart or Menards as well they have decent warranty and I believe the Walmart battery is actually made by Exide and the Menards batteries are made by the same company who makes AC Delco. I think there are only about 3 battery manufacturer left in the US.

Also, I have a 17 with 96k on it and I checked the plugs at 92k and they were fine. I would forgo the dealerships tune up suggestion. If your able to do it yourself, order the plugs and wires from Rockauto and air filter and spend a morning doing it in at around 100k or so. Also, if you comforatble doing it, take off the air collector box and take the throttle body off and clean. There are plenty of Youtube vids which clearly layout the process.
