update on progress
I got the work started and ordered most parts from Chevy.
Misfire on cylinder number three. Third lifter back. Had minimal scarring on the roller. A non-DOD lifter for the exhaust. The cam lobe was scarred fairly decent.
Vehicle has 140,000 miles.
I got the oil up to temp and did an oil change. With new filter. Got that oil up to and then drained and removed filter. I will replace oil and filter after all work is complete, get it up to temps and then do another oil change. They had the oil at Costco on sale so I got the person limit of five.
Parts ordered new.
VOLM, which should have a new oil, pressure sensor and screen?
Rockers and rods
Lifters and lifter trays
Head bolts
Cam and Cam plate
One time use fuel lines
All the belts and all the gaskets
My questions are. Consideration of close to 150k miles and trying to cut costs on not needed stuff or easy to get to things.
1. Should I replace the water water pump or just wait for it to go out?
2. I had a hard time getting out the injectors which I probably should’ve left them in since I didn’t plan on taking my heads to a machine shop. But I have seen others who had hard times getting them out and then having misfires afterwards. Something about them being very fragile. my question is should I just replace them and knowing the miles? Maybe it’s a good idea anyways? Or do they still have a lot of life in them?
2. Is it detrimental to this process to have the heads machines? I did see that there is a reverse procedure for taking the bolts out, but I didn’t see that until I had already taken one off. I have them extremely clean along with the block.
3. Should I replace the timing chain? I’m really on a time crunch here and would hate to have to drop everything on the front end on the bottom side of the engine to get it out because I’m assuming the only way to get it back on is to have the oil pump out-of-the-way?
4. Does the oil pump need to be replaced? Or does it have life left in it?
5. do I absolutely have to change the rockers and rods? They look pretty good. I was just going to do them since I had it all apart, but I would like to cut costs.
I think that’s it. Hopefully this thread still has some traction and can help me some more. I appreciate everyone who has helped. I have learned a lot since the first time I posted.
