Serious question as I never own a vehicle with more than 70k miles on it...is rusting through frames really still a thing?

In areas where sodium chloride is used for de-icing roads. Less with mag or calcium chloride, but still a risk, even with anti-rust additives.

The paint and body panels on most vehicles has material in them, then that acts like the Anode, on marine outboard motors and hot water tanks, this is slowly consumed and has a lifespan of about 5- 6 years, your typical rust through warranty. There fore, I start using Crown rust proofing at that time. That leaves the steel tubing, brake lines etc vulnerable, I give that a squirt from a rattle can before the 5 year period. So far that has worked good for me
