All the extra computers/electronics/software create more areas where things can go wrong. Thats not a cheap China parts issue, its just a fact of integrating complex technology.
Good point there. Read an article recently about high failure rates for refrigerators. The actual sealed unit is still pretty reliable but the ice/water unit and other fancy gizmos are big problems. We bought a new pretty basic Whirlpool side by side last year, fingers crossed that it lasts 30 years like our previous - near identical - fridge.

In my previous life as an appliance tech for 46 yrs. the LG, Samsung, GE appliances which that name is now belonging to Haire a Chinese Co. is all China built garbage. LG are known for 2 yr compressor failures, replacement comp. is same as the OEM one. Fix it to get it out of warranty is the protocol. Only Whirlpool, Maytag and Kitchen Aid in my house. Samsung washers are now under a CPSC recall for fires in over 60k units also. They say it's software issues.

A big regional supplier of appliances down here in SW Florida told us that all the appliances are made to such a lousy standards now that if you get anything over 5 to 6 years out of a new appliance, consider yourself lucky unless you’re buying super high end like wolf or subzero.
The waiting time to find a competent service person coupled with the price of repair parts put most of them in a class of replace rather than repair.

also remember that Chinese parts are made in super high volumes for high demand things and then they are heat treated or chemically processed in large volume furnaces or baths that may or may not come to heat throughout the entire batch of massive metal containers in that furnace or process. Their parts may very well meet spec on a sampling basis, but that does not mean that the whole batch 100% conforms to a hardness level or coating thickness required by print. As someone from the aerospace industry, I can tell you there are 1 million more criterion to affect product quality other than just “meeting spec”. it comes down to material composition,in-process inspection levels, batch processing consistency, and final inspection scrutiny, approval and sign off.

Just fix your own appliances. It’s pretty easy, there’s usually one control board and a few moving parts. I honestly don’t see the need for an appliance repair person in my case. Most of us on this forum fix our own vehicles which are 100x more complicated than any appliance. And parts are pretty damn cheap especially considering the cost of a new appliance. There’s YouTube for most of the common issues also. My LG stuff is 12 years old and I’ve replaced a few parts here and there but in all honesty they’re pretty easy to fix.

As far as bashing Chinese parts, I find it pretty comical that people group all the stuff made there as junk when in fact every single manufacturer, whether US based or not have parts made in China as well as all over the world. They get what they pay for as far as quality. The good plants have strict QC and throw out things like molds etc when the parts start to fail QC whereas the cheapest ones don’t, and there’s little oversight. Even your GM has Chinese parts as well as parts manufactured in at least a dozen other countries.

Ha Ha….

A pretty fair share of society can’t even change a switch plate cover, let alone fix their own appliances! Where we are a repair person is always at least 2-4 weeks out and that’s just to diagnose it. Most just replace them if they are generic pieces…

Yep and that’s why they’re going to be in trouble later in life. If all you know to do as far as fixing your own stuff you’ll always be at the mercy of someone else who will take advantage of you. I grew up learning how to fix everything myself- cars, homes, etc. I believe there will come a time when people won’t be able to find people to even build their homes, much less fix what’s inside it or fix what they drive. All the young people seem to think the only life skill they need can be accomplished on a keyboard. But like I said, I was talking about the members of this forum, not the general population. Now if you want to say that most of us here can’t change a switch plate cover, better put your dukes up. That might be the case for you guys that only buy the new vehicles but I still say the majority of the forum members are pretty decent at repairing things. As for myself, I could build my own house or completely disassemble and reassemble any of my vehicles. Appliances are easy. I know of nobody in my life that just buys new appliances when they break down. I guess I’m in a completely different world than you. I like to rely on myself and not some joker that says they’re too busy for me. F that.

I like to fix my own stuff, but my GF doesn't approve of my "parts cannon" approach.

2x, I'm the same way, if I can't do I don't need it. I will farm out the crappy dirty stuff now that I'm too lazy or old to do or if it needs a lift like engine cradle drops. Gearheads on here will tackle most jobs unlike the 98% who can't even change a tire and sit on the side of the road for hours waiting for AAA.

Agree, it’s nice to have a choice on if I want to do it myself or not. Plus I know exactly what it takes to do pretty much anything so when someone tries to feed me some bullsh*t I can call them out on it. :) The last time wasn’t long ago when I was having my main breaker box replaced in my house. I have actually done one myself. So when they started telling me there was only one way to do it, I let them know I knew better. There’s always multiple ways to do things like that, just depends on how much effort you’re putting into it. They ended up putting more effort in it than they were planning.:yaoface2: After they did the main box, I replaced my sub panel myself.
