2024 Yukon Denali Diesel impressions

GM's have been like as far back as I can remember. I have an idea it's because some states you are not suppose to use them unless weather requires it. I had an employee cited for it a few years ago in Montana out of all places. He was told unless the weather conditions required the lights, they are to remain off.

Interesting…. That makes some sense at least. Still drives me nuts but if there was some logic at play I’ll leave it be lol.

I hit my favorite employee, the shop manager. He said there were a few states, but GM in the early 2000's moved the light function from a switch/relay function, to the BCM (Body Control Module). The BCM is CAN Bus controlled, and the majority of the BCM functions are ECM controlled. There are 2 exceptions, the upfitter recepticle, and some, but not all of the trailer braking connection recepticle. He said in the GM world, the BCM and DIM (Dash Integration Module), are one in the same, and used interchangibly.
The ECM powers off most of the BCM to minimize battery drain when the vehcile is shutoff, which causes most of the latching circuits to unlatch, or shutoff. The BCM has no memory that allows it to retain the settings, this is all done in the ECM. He said it is possible to use a few diodes to have them come on, but you will likely loose the auto on/off function of the lights.

I’m about 20,000 miles into the experience with this Yukon Denali - I wanted to share what I’ve found -

First, the radio is awful. No HD, and no plans to fix it.

Second, they moved the grab handle to a place that’s horribly inconvenient, above the front seats.

The ten speed transmission is indecisive, hunting its way to something that delivers mediocre performance.

The Car Play implementation is good, but it will sporadically drop the connection all together.

The diesel is really good.

SuperCruise is meh (it does not hold a candle to BlueCruise)

Overall, it’s a mediocre at best vehicle at a premium price tag.

If Ford really introduces a new Excursion, I’ll trade this piece of excrement in a heartbeat.

Overall, an awful experience. Good dealer. Great service department. Bad GM.

I have the base model LT diesel 2021 LMT and could not be happier. I think the engine and drive train are stellar. Ample low end torque = smooth effortless motion. The build quality and durability are tops. Lots of city driving - this thing is tough. It has strong acceleration and nimble handling. Reliability is 100%, free from defects. Interior is like an Audi. I have had a lot of cars, including fancy imports. This is the best. I love the engine and transmission. This trim level is right for me. I cannot understand complaints about this transmission, but I guess people drive differently. My engine usually stays 1,500 - 2,000, no turbo lag when I floor it and gets terrific milage.
