The left strut provides the power lift for the tailgate, so that part can be more easily adapted. However, the latch mechanism has to be electronically released before the strut can open the gate.

If you get a manual with the wiring diagrams for the release latch and strut motor, you may be able to wire up your own setup. If you're really lucky, the wiring harness is already in place and you will find unconnected wires all ready to use.
