2WD/4WD Trans compatibility

Hey guys,

The tranny on my 04 ltz z71 blew up again, and this time at only 34K miles. This one was a rebuilt version of the original and set me back 2500 bucks right at 3 years ago. I can't keep going on like this, so I want to just get a junk yard tranny for 200 bucks and throw it in. Can't possibly be much worse than 34K.

I've started calling around and have been told the 2wd versions might not be compatible with the 4wd truck? is that true? I would think as long as I'm using all the rest of my own stuff it should swap right in.

Also, is it 2002-2004 or 2000-2006 that will work?

00-06 is a safe bet. And no 2wd and 4wd/awd are not the same. If your getting quotes $2500 you're at the wrong builder, point blank. My 2 built 4l60Es were around 1150 with the good internal parts. This will help you out.

Thanks for the heads up. I found a 4x4 transmission a couple hours away with a broken tail shaft housing from when it was removed (allegedly) that I'm going to pick up for 200 bucks and take a chance on. I'll just swap the tail shaft housing off of mine.

On that rebuild cost, was that including installation labor? I was under the impression swapping these was fairly difficult in the 4wd (at least at the time) but I have all the tools to do it myself so I'll be swapping this one in.

Any tips before the swap? I know I need to replace at least the filter and the fluid while it is out, but anything else I should know?

No that was just the price for the rebuild.
