Anyone accomplished building a 383 to replace your original 350? I bought a complete L31 Vortec 350 (just like in your tahoe or yukon) I have loads of questions as far as timing and computer issues. The block is on its way to the machine shop...ready to make a decision "383 or 355"

I'm using a 355 now with no problems at all but everything is all stock. I plan on a 383 as well and I'm sure as long as you aren't making a 450hp+ monster everything should be fine. I dropped in a mild 383 in my old 97 z28 and didnt have any ecm problems. Once you start replacing MAF and fuel system components is where you will start having problems.

I just installed the HT383E crate engine from GM. It was a better investment for me to just go with a crate rather than a rebuild. I would recommend the 383 stroker cause if your going to take the time and expense to do it, just go bigger. It is a lot of work to get that engine in and out. You don't want to say "shoulda, woulda, coulda". A 383 is actually a 6.2 liter motor! Go for it!

Depends who/where you ask on the displacement... I've seen the 383 listed as 6.3L.

I agree that if you're gonna yank it and mod it, might as well go all out. 383 is the way I'd go, whether stroking it or crating it.

Damn it! "Shoulda, Woulda, Coulda"... HAHAHA...
Yup, I'm saying those words all the time, when I see threads like this....sigh...

After signing up for this forum, two months after new 5.7l GM Crate install, I went back to shop.. It was only $1000 difference for the 383.. Damn it! Ignorance is not bliss, it's a kick myself in the ass!

I say, spend the extra and buy what you want already in crate form...

The old Vortec is running strong and doesnt burn a drop, It will be a while, I figured everyone would say go 383...I have built several blocks, never considered Crate, but it may be the way to go, its pricey either way. Just dont want ECM trouble, I figured the ECM would freak out with the timing and compression changes. But if it worked in a 97 Z28, it should work in the Hoe. Guess I can just build a 355 with this 880 block if I opt to go HT383E and sell the 880 on CL. And if I built the 383, I would totally rock the Stroker Balanced Rotating Assembly. Build it right the first time.
