im just over 1000 miles into my new used 2013 Yukon Denali and can't ever really find a speed or place for the 4 cyl to hold steady. I'm surprised at how much it will move back and forth, and that I can't always feel it when it makes the change. Passengers have noticed the slight surge or pulse associated with it going from 4 to 8. I live in Florida so flat roads with cruise at 45-50, it will still go back and forth. Cruise off and me trying to be careful with throttle, still does it. Not every second, but it just won't stay too long in 4 before going to 8 then back to 4 before long.

Is this normal, month the back and forth but also the sensation I feel?

It's really useless. It only stays in 4cyc on a down hill and as soon as the slightest need to keep at cruise it will go back into 8 cyl. The afm is a good idea on paper but realistically it Dosent save you any gas and is more a headache cause it makes your truck consume oil.

Ok, so it sounds like my experience with it is similar to others I guess. I was really thinking my truck had a problem and was behaving differently than intended but perhaps not.

Is the re program really a fix used by many or do people just live with it?

You can deal with it and just do oil changes more frequent so you don't run into the low oil light on the dash. Another option is search for a range afm on Amazon. It's plugs into your dlc under he dash and stays plugged in. It disables the afm and keeps your truck in 8cyl all the time

I purchased "the range" a while back and its been great. Some on here may write negative things about it and tell you to get a tune, but so far "the range" has served its purpose in my opinion.

The cylinder shutdown system is impractical, will not last the life of the engine. You will have fewer mechanical problems if you override the system. The federal government should stay away from mandating poorly engineered/manufactured automotive systems. In the long run, there is no savings from these devices, no matter who the manufacturer is.

In Hondas the cylinder deactivation causes fouled plugs and misfires. Odyssey and pilots often end up with oil consumption problems. They usually end up getting Pistons replaced
In the cylinders that uses the deactivation feature.
