I have just purchased a 1997 Yukon which has a bad transmission. It has the one piece bell housing 4l60e and I purchased a used one which is a two piece bell housing. I have been told that it will work and I have been told that it won't. Looking for some help from you hopefully to make some sense of this. I had no idea a transmission could be so confusing. It is a 4x4.
Thanks,
Chris

I thought only the LS based 4L60s were full circle bell housings ... I understand the torque converter was different ... I doubt it will work but I'm not an expert, just built my own. :p

Thanks blueflamed

I was looking for a bit more than they have different models. I need to know if you can put a two piece bell housing on a car that came with the one piece. I am well aware of the different options but desperately need to know if I can use the two piece or do I need to sell it and buy a one. Anyone who can answer this I will be grateful.

4L60e HELP

I am new to this forum and seriously need help. Let's face it the transmissions in our vehicles aren't know for there quality and long life. I need to know if you can put a two piece bell housing in a car that came with a one piece. I see several issues that cause concern, one is how do you cover the bottom of the case as there is no where to bolt the housing to? Is there a cover you can buy to put on the bottom to cover the flywheel and torque convertor? I have to imagine that I am not the only one to have asked this question?
Thanks,
Chris

Mine is an early 96 build and has the removable inspection/dust cover like the 700r4. I've seen them with both styles though so either will work. There are 2 braces that run from the removable lower up to the frame by the motor mounts, this may be a 4wd only thing though. You should be able to get the cover and braces at a junkyard, only 6 or 8 bolts hold it on, and the trans doesn't have to be dropped. If you need a pic or 2 I can try to get you some.

Different bellhousing and different input shaft. The M30 for the Gen-III motors use a 33-spline input shaft vs. 30 for the Gen-I and Gen-II SBC.

The way I read that is if it came behind a Gen 1 or Gen 2 engine you should be good and the torque converters will be the same

You just need to messure the input shaftes and count splines to make sure it isn't an lsx trans. I belive the input shafts are different lengths. I know they are between the LS1's and the LT1's
