True that. Also, if it turns out to be a problem with your transfer case (worst-case); You can find rebuilds with the problem solver case mod on Craigslist here for $400 - no core charge. I don't think it'd be hard to find a remanufactured one for a reasonable price.
Good news thanks for that

No, you are NOT going crazy! I have an 04 Z71. There is no Traction Control button. We have Limited Slip with the G80 rear differential locker.
Ditto, i have a 04 z71 there is no traction control on these. I am suprised your locker didnt activate. After 1.5 revolutions that rear differential should make a loud clunk noise and then the other rear wheel should start spinning. The z71 has an eaton locker in it from the factory maybe yours is not z71. But this has nothing to do with your transfer case issue but it does show you dont buy a 4x4 without a locker. Your spending a lot of money for a 2 wheel drive system at best when everything is working. With locker at least you will get 3 wheels spinning instead one one front and one rear spinning. i had the dreaded oil pump rub through the case issue and i had to take every piece out of the transfer case…its really not that complicated….nothing like a transmission…i think the transfer case is fine i would proceed with encoder or the front actuator replacement…

A lot of people say to get a tech2 scan and trace wires. Most people cant get one of those and too much trouble to be honest trying to figure out electronics. There is nothing wrong with that but although i have a degree in physics i am really simple minded. Another approach is to observe what it is physically doing. It will require you to jack up all 4 wheels off the ground. If you do this please be careful. But if you jacked up all 4 wheels put in 4x4 and put it in drive and release break that front axle should be spinning.

If front axle is spinning but front wheels are not something is wrong with axel actuator but transfer case and case encoder is ok. If front axel is not spinning it could be more things but transfer case or a transfer case encoder is likely bad.

you could test the front axel by putting in transmission in nuetral and spin the front axel by hand one of the front wheels should spin. This would tell u the axel and front wheel is actuated together….

I agree that locker/limited slip G80 should of grabbed. I jacked up the rear and spun the wheel with my hands and that bad boy locked up. Not sure if it is warm and doesn’t operate under heavy load. Not sure if the G80 needs rebuilding at some time. Thanks friend. :)

So your transfer case shaft was the one with two flats. Interesting. The one for my '04 was a keyed splined shaft.
