4WD Switch?

Strange observation to add to this thread. As time has gone on, this problem of the Tahoe showing that it was in N(red light) or 4Lo(orange light) was getting worse.

One time when it "stuck" in 4Lo according to the dash switch(not really in 4Lo), I tried another dash switch and it showed the same, so I have nailed it down to the encoder ring being the problem child.

However, a few more weeks have gone by and one time when it working correctly(showing 2Hi), just for sh*ts and giggles, I shifted to Auto 4wd, then back to 2Hi. Ever since then, it has not acted up, gone to N or 4Lo, not even once.

I don't know if "exercising" the shift control in the transfer case encoder motor has had a positive effect?? Probably just coincidence, but interesting outcome after shifting nonetheless.

I have an encoder ring on the way, and will install once it starts throwing fits again, but for now, I'm gonna ride the "working correctly" wave.

Good timing on this thread. I am in the intermittent Red(N) / Service FWD mode now. Does anyone have a favorite YouTube/writeup of replacing the encoder ring? If not I'll just google but looking to save a wander through the timesuck of YT.

I replaced the encoder motor sensor ring part last week and it appears to have fixed the problem. No more showing in N or 4Lo and the trans shifting funky.

One thing I did notice right away when I pulled the old encoder motor sensor ring out is that the used one has no spring left between the 2 pieces, whereas the new Dorman part had spring tension holding the inner and outer plastic rings apart. They could be pushed together, but their resting position was apart. Hope that makes sense and wondering if anyone else had noticed a "collapsed" encoder motor sensor ring when they replaced it?
