On my '96 Yukon, when start the vehicle, all the lights on the push-button selector come on and stay on (2hi, 4auto, 4hi, 4lo), except for the neutral indication light. I shift to neutral but the indicator light does not come on and all the other button lights are still on. Pushing any of the selector buttons do not make any change to the lights and there is no audible noise coming from the transfer case (if there's supposed to be some noise).

Side note: the button lights are dim, and do not get brighter as I adjust the instrument cluster lights, which leads me to think that perhaps the lights are not on at all, but just reflecting light.

First off have you checked all the fuses first?

I have not, but I will check in the morning and I will tell you if I've found any blown fuses. Thanks.

OK, so I have checked the fuses and the one for 4wd was still good, but I swapped it out for another fuse (same amp rating) just to be sure. The button lights seem to be brighter, but all of them are still on, and the neutral indication light still will not come on in neutral.

Ive messed around with it some today, and when I took off the panel surrounding the radio and instrument cluster etc. I noticed that one of the two cables that plugged into the 4x4 selector was probably shorted, and would only work in a specific position. I didn't have time to mess with it after that, but I am going to trace the wire to wherever it leads and try to find out something if I can.

Shifting to Neutral
To shift the transfer case to neutral, first make sure the vehicle is parked so that it will not roll:
1. Set the parking brake.
2. Start the vehicle.
3. Connect the vehicle to the towing vehicle.
4. Put the transmission in NEUTRAL (N).
5. Shift the transfer case to 2HI.
6. Simultaneously press and hold the 2HI and 4LO buttons for 10 seconds. The red NEUTRAL light will come on when the transfer case shift to neutral is complete.
(I am guessing this is what you tried?)
The 4X4 switch buttons are Notorious for malfunctioning. Some electronics cleaner might help, or maybe try re-soldering the switch board. I believe that replacement 4X4 switches will be manufactured in China like the original equipment.

unknown at this time.
verify t-case model and year and rpo code np1 or np8 along with picture of selector switch. your year did not have a neutral option for the transfer case. we will go from there.
