Ok talked to dealer. Collapsed intake lifter. I asked about AFM and they said if disabled the check engine light will always stay on. Also the want to charge 1900 for just the one lifter and 3200 to replace all. Any thoughts and does anyone know another reliable mechanic in Sacramento California?

They said that about the CEL because they wanted to scare you in to doing the work with them. Take the time to look around for a quality shop and then ask them if they are familiar with this problem and the repair we are talking about. If they have enough experience then they should know about it because it has happened so much. They will probably have access to the TSB about it and have a way to take care of it if they have done enough of them and maybe even be able to disable the AFM.

Ok. Got "honest engine" in Roseville ca they gave me a 1500 dollar quote for all lifters. I don't know this shop but in net the are highly rated. Does this sound a little to good to be true? I also have another mechanic that owns a shop and is a friend of a friend that has taken all his vehicles to for many years quoting 2100. What are your thoughts. Both give me a 12 month 12000 mile warranty. Also can u explain a little more about tuning out AFM. What I will need, how to do it, and cost. Thanks for all your help guys.

I would talk to both shops and see who you feel comfortable with. Insist on FELPRO gasket sets when reassemble. Have them install new AC Delco knock sensors with new harnesses from either AC Delco or Dorman while it is apart. You did a web search of first shop but didn't mention about the other shop web search. Sometimes web searches can be all from the shop under different names and contact information. Check for the ASE Certs. Ask what brand of parts/lifters will be used. As far as the AFM disable, I have not done it but someone here can likely fill you in. Hopefully they agree with me about the knock sensors.

X2 on that, also. If it is a friend of a friend of a friend thing then he will likely take better care of you to keep from pissing off his friend who recommended him in the first place.

Thanks guys. I actually got the yellow pages and called about 8 shops. This was by far the cheapest so really they are the only ones I really researched. When I asked about AFM they had no clue about that. But my friends friends guys knows about the AFM issues. I'm going to friend of friend. I will update when they tell me what brands and ect.

Yeah if they don't know about the AFM issues that'd be a red flag to me so sounds like you made a good choice

Make sure whatever estimate they give you after they look at it includes the knock sensors and harnesses and spells out in great detail what you are getting for your money and the warranty. Hope it all comes out ok. Let us know. Also, make sure after he gets started, that you can recommend his work on this forum for the Sac area.

Will do. Just dropped car off. He will get started first thing and let me know parts and manufactures. I will updat as soon as I hear anything to make sure he is using parts that will hopefully last. All help on that too would be appreciated. In the mean time can u tell me s little more about AFM tuning. Cost difficulty and prolonged effects of known. Will this eventually damage something else if done?

Make sure the parts estimate is for the NON AFM lifters. I have never had an AFM vehicle and had to disable it so I can't tell you about that except the reason people get the non AFM lifters and disable AFM tune is to get rid of a problem. From what I understand there is no other problems after. The only thing a dealer might say is that now you will use more fuel at highway speed. If it actually does it would be nothing compared to the AFM problems that cause headaches and empty pocketbooks.
