What oil do you guys run in your 5.3L? Mine likes to drink it's oil so I am trying to research what oil I should be using to hopefully slow consumption down some. I have seen just about every grade being used in these motors but was wondering if anyone else was able to cure their own consumption issues with a different oil? I currently run 5w30 non-synthetic and have no plans to run synthetic since putting a quart in every 500-1000 miles gets expensive.

Should I run a heavier oil, or a lighter oil? Any opinions welcome. And yes, I know GM considers this type of consumption "normal" as well as the piston slap that I also have. And I have replaced the PCV valve with the new style with no changes.

I don't have that problem but I use 5w30 synthetic oil and have not had a problem ever since I switched to synthetic. I would recommend going a little thicker mabey 10w30? How many miles are on your engine ?

133k miles, uses about 1 to 1.5 quarts every 1k miles or so. I was thinking of trying 15W40 next time (Rotella T) but not sure if thats a good route to go or not. Figured I would check in here for advice.

Been using Rotella 15-45 in all my vehicles for more years than I can count now. Dirtbikes, Streetbikes, Ford Exploder, Ford Expedition, Chevy Suburban and my Tahoe with zero problems. I live in Az though so I dont have to worry about freezing conditions.

Thicker oil is not always the solution, just makes the engine work harder, especially if it gets cold where you live. I would go no higher than 10w-30. I run 5w-30 Mobil 1 high mileage. It has a slightly more robust additive package, more zinc. If it were mine, I'd probably run a synthetic 10w-30 and add a bottle of Restore.

Continue using the GM approved oil, even if you have to top off every so often. Changing to a non-recommended weight or non-GM approved brand could cause problems down the road. As for me, I use mobile 1 5w30, fwiw.

Heavier oil is not the solution. No leaks anywhere? Main seal is notorious.
