Thanks everyone for the help on this. I think Tigersyz is on the right track with what I'm hearing. Sounds like the knock is coming from the driver side valve cover. I plan on running a cleaner in the crankcase and an oil change with a good filter this weekend. We'll see if it cleans it up. If not,I'll take the cover off and spray the chemtool into the lifters.

hard to really diagnose over the intrnet but that sounds more like a rod knock, maybe even piston slap, than a rattle to me but i not a mechanic...im sure someone else will know better... sorry bud

Looks like you were on to something. I ran the cleaner through and changed the oil and replaced a quart with risolen or whatever. Noise still here, if not worse now. After some digging it seems like the sound in the video and on cold start up is likely lifter noise but it goes away quickly. However, the sound I was hearing when warm is a different noise altogether. Started getting louder so swung by the mechanic today. They said sounded more like rod knock or bad bearings. Thoughts? I have an appointment next week to have it checked out. Pretty nervous this might be a bigger deal than I originally thought.

Ok all. Sorry I took so long to update. Been very busy. Long story short, mechanic thinks the bottom end noise is rod bearing or camshaft bearing. From anything I've listened to online, it sounds like that's what it is :emotions122: So I'm going for a crate long block swap. He wants to use a motor from S&J Motors out of Spokane, WA, but they do a long block with all seals and gaskets for $1700. With labor and all he's quoting me around $3200 for everything. I would consider doing it myself but really don't have the time/tools/knowhow. Does that seem reasonable? People in town recommended him and have had good success with these long blocks. They also come with a 7 year 100,000 mile warranty for parts and labor.

That swaps your existing intake, injectors and distributor over to the new one, right? It'd be a good time to upgrade to the multiport injectors.

Shit long block, everything is there all you have to do is pull the motor, swap brackets, alt, wiring, etc.... go rent an engine hoist and save yourself some money, seriously not that hard

Austin, don't give in yet. From what I hear plus what you described, I would be checking the FLEXPLATE (flywheel). They have been know to crack or be loose and create this type of noise. IMO, if it was a rod bearing noise you would not drive it for long. I've also never heard of a CAM BEARING noise either. PISTON SLAP is not uncommon on a cold start engine but is very slight when warm. GM has been using TRW pistons for a long time and their know for the skirt noise. One other post mentioned catalytic convertor bracket which solved his, so look into it a little further before dropping over $3K. It would make you sick when the engine comes out to find the noise is elsewhere. You can see by my age I've heard a lot of engines run, and I'm just not buying the diagnosis. Let us know what you find, and good luck.
