Consequently....If I do need a new engine, is there a popular source others have used that is reasonable? I hate to ditch the rig since I just got it back from the ex. The condition is really good for a rust belt vehicle but at some point the value just isn't there.

So WHY does it have no compression on cylinder one? Just checking compression isn’t the end of diagnosis here. It could be many different things that are NOT a death sentence for the engine.

I seafoamed my truck and go the same code. Come to find out, I didn't secure the air intake hose securely back to the throttle body!

Hopefully it's something simple!

The latest is...as I expected valve spring is broken. No damage to the piston so he can replace it. It's got a fair amount of miles as well as a rear seal leak so I did ask about a replacement engine. For a Jasper engine replacement it's $7100. I'm leaning towards the new engine since I'm assuming it's only a matter of time before the other springs let loose. We replaced #7 a year and a half ago. But that is a lot of money.

He did pull the valve cover and found a broken spring. We did have a similar issue a year and a half ago with #7.

when the dealer replaced mine it came out to $9999.00 for a new crate motor, even $7100 is steep in my case the cam had taken a shit and I had insurance on it with a $100 deductible but I kicked in the extra $1000 to get the new motor instead of a rebuilt. if it popped a spring now I would probably just replace the springs and roll with it that's really the only flaw that these engines are known for.

Why not just upgrade the valve springs on all the valves and forget about it?
Great point. I’ve still got an oil pan and rear main leak that’ll have to be fixed. So, another $1500. That’ll put me roughly at $2-2500 into an engine with 170,000 miles.
I bought it from the ex for $1000. If I drop in a new engine, I’m still not under water value wise (but close) and I have a brand new engine.

I'm just hesitant about Jasper engines... I have no personal experience with them but I have heard of some issues.

These engines will run 300k+ miles if proper maintenance is done. You could have the oil pan, rear main and upgraded valve springs installed for substantially less than the Jasper engine.

Just one opinion.
