98 Yukon - Police Package? Yes/No?

My in-laws scoped this one out for me and mom in-law says it has a police package on it. I did some searching here and found a thread that someone had asked how they can tell. I went to a site linked in the thread to look up RPO codes.

I know the GM lists SSV's for police service as 9C1's. But that is not listed in the RPO codes, though I am not sure if it would be. The first site I went to did not have a listing of all the codes. I found a second site which gave me info on those codes I did not find on the first site. I do, however, have a question or three.

1) The first site found this - code L31 : 409 CID V8 400HP (SPECIAL HIGH PERFORMANCE-SOLID LIFTER CAM). The second site listed it as a 5.7 liter (350) V-8. I know codes are subject to change over time, and my Yuk does have the 5.7L. Could it actually have the cam that's listed?

2) Code RL9 was not found on either site, does anyone happen to know what that code is?

3) These are listed on the bottom of the RPO sheet: U 9792, L 228A. What do these refer too?

Other than these things, I have no clue how to distinguish a regular Yukon from one with a police package. It's not super important, but it would be nice to be able to order the correct part when it calls for a different one than standard.


Love my Yukon either way.

At the time OBS trucks were made, the L31 code was just the regular old 5.7. These trucks only came with three engines, the 6.5 diesel (very rare), the 350 vortec, and for the 2500 Suburbans a 454 was an option as well. The last two codes listed asre paint codes i believe.

central point injection. all the injectors were housed in in a single body with lines to each cylinder with a poppet valve at each end. each cylinder got its own down the manifold runners. unfortunately the poppets mixed with low quality gas proved problematic. they have since redesigned the unit to work so much better. if you have the original injector spider in there do your self a favor if it has not been already and replace it along with your lower manifold to block gasket. if you had to state what were the major issues with the engine build it would be those along with maybe the distributor gear. not biggies really butt that covers how most of the engine failures happen. the new spider from amazon
