99 tahoe ppv spider injection

How's it going guys, I recently purchased a 99tahoe rwd PPV. it has the 5.7 v8 with spider injection. when I bought it, the guy told me that it has a hard time starting when warm, also it'll sometimes die at idle because it could be starving for fuel. i replaced the fuel pressure regulator in the spider injection system hoping that would fix my idle problem and warm start. im new to spider injection from the 90's so i was hoping i could get a pointer in the right direction to see if anyone has had this problem. thank you!!

Buy the new spider kit, do the lower intake manifold gaskets while you are there. You will need a scanner that will read cam position offset.
As far as where you are now, try scanning live data- Fuel trims, misfires, map sensor,etc.
A fuel pressure check is in order, put a long hose on it so you can watch it while driving.
Cap,rotor, wires go fast on these.

the whole spider unit? ill do that. this doesnt have a distributor, it was the ignition coil on the back of the block. would my warm start struggles be the coil getting too hot? i usually pump the gas and itll start

I just replaced the Spider with the MPFI from Motorman, and did the new Felpro lower intake gaskets in the spring. It was a nice upgrade. It could definitely be your coil if it is dying when it gets warm though. Your engine would be using more fuel when it is cold, so I would be leaning more towards ignition when it is warm. A new coil shouldn’t run you too much. Whenever I do jobs like that I change cap, rotor, wires and plugs too. How many miles on the truck?

If you pull off the Vortec air plenum, and look all the way toward the back of the intake, you Don’t have one of these?…..

sonofabitch i definitely do have that! i had no idea it was a cap with a rotor! learn something new every day! and it was 250k on it, just bought it, retired highway patrol truck so i will DEFINETLY start with that too. i was hoping to not have to replace the whole spider injection system its like 900 from gm. how easy and is the swap to mpi worth it? ill take all the details you got!

The Spider replacement is a Long weekend project…if everything looks good when it is disassembled. The coolant ports on my lower intake were so badly corroded and pitted, I had to bead blast the intake, and build the surface back up with Metalset aluminum epoxy. These lower intakes are no longer commercially available.

I would say, if you can get the truck running so it doesn’t stall, run it for a while and enjoy the awesomeness of a PPV. After you cruise the town, get underneath the truck and look for coolant drips hanging off the bottom of your harmonic balancer…..now it’s time to think about doing the lower intake gaskets. And while you are in there do the spider. Get the Felpro gaskets, and Felpro sells new lower intake bolts I would definitely get too.I attached a picture with the P/N on it.

The spider injection system should not cost $900. Look at Amazon or Rock Auto. Should be around $300. If the one without the hold down bracket is cheaper, get that. You don't need it unless your bracket is broken. The MPFI unit is the one to get, not the poppet style.

It does have a distributor, which is what @YukonGTmaster showed a picture of. Those are notorious for getting moisture under the cap and causing firing issues.

Everything else @YukonGTmaster and @exp500 said are great places to start!

Just did mine with the help of the forum, runs great.
Don't forget to clean the throttle body and MAF sensor while you're at it.
