NP246, NV246, and NVG246 are all the same case, the name relates to the time frame of the case and/or the person referring to the case. New Process gear became New Venture gear, ultimately becoming a division of Magna Powertrain and making New Venture Gear transfer cases at a plant on New Process Gear drive in Syracuse.
The NVG 246 and 246 EAU are different, however. The EAU case had a host of changes/upgrades.
As for driving it in 2WD I wouldn't unless you are ready to write off that case. If the front case half is damaged by a broken chain or debris in the annulus gear you'll have to replace it.
