greetings and salutations forum dwellers.1999 tahoe 5.7L.turn the key dash lights up fine, fuel pump primes, dash gauge reads 12ish volts(actual voltage@battery is 12.75) try to start it and it slowly turns over once or twice and then the rapid clicking sound a dead battery usually makes.if i hook up a jumper pack or battery charger the truck will turn over immediately and start with no hesitation at all.starter solenoid?or some type of grounding issue?any input from you folks would be greatly appreciated.thanks in advance

Are the post corroded? I would disconnect the battery and clean the post with a wire brush, also clean the cable ends. Check the water level in the battery if it's not a maintenance free battery.
Whenever I have a starting/clicking problem that is solved by jumping the vehicle, I just replace the battery and then everything works fine.

checked & cleaned the terminals.one terminal screw was a little loose so i replaced it.the battery is a die hard gold and is only about 1 year old.unfortunately the sears i purchased it at closed and now the nearest one is an hour away.i have checked the battery before i try to start it and it is always at 12.6v or higher.

nope.it is still doing it with the clean/new terminal

It's probably a bad battery then. Even if it reads 12.6 or 12.75, it can still be bad. May not have enough cranking power(amps) to crank it. If you can find someone with the same battery, try switching it out and seeing if it'll turn over. If it does, then you've got a bad battery.

maybe ill drive up to sears tomorrow and get the battery checked out

Like Big Roller it's not just the volts at the battery, it needs good cold cranking amps. You can check the battery while it's under load yourself if you have a multimeter. If the wires are long enough place it so that you can see the display from inside your truck, if you can't you can get someone to read it for you or set up a camera to record it. Keep your multimeter on volts, attach the probes to the battery go into the truck and turn it over a few turns. You should not see the volts go under 10, if the volts go down to 3 or 4 while you are cranking it, it needs a new battery because one or more cells in the battery are dead.

If you don't have a multimeter, Autozone or any auto parts store will test it for you for free.
