about to lift, what to rebuild first?

ok... this looks like a real PITA...
http://www.fullsizechevy.com/forum/general-discussion/offroad/59097-solid-axle-conversion-tech.html

i have access to a 1990 F-150 on the cheap. its an inline 6cyl with 4x4...wonder if it would work?

furthermore....do i even need to be looking into this? i dont offroad a ton...just mild mudding. usually to the middle of the tires. i tow a bass boat or a toy hauler camper with a polaris rzr in it a fair bit if that matters...
but then again, i am prone to hop curbs and such...i DO play some i mean, i paid extra for that z71 logo and i use it... if i feel like climbing a hill on the side of the road, i do it...so that being said, and knowing that im doing 35s i guess i really should look more into this swap... lockers up front and in the back and dual dayna 60s with lockers and 35" Nitto Trail Grapplers should be a pretty snazzy setup i would think...

ok. been doing some research. looks like you loose a TON of ground clearance doing this swap... but to do it, it looks like i need an axle from a 79 f250 is the best bet. is that right? im finding complete units for around $500-$800 then this kit http://www.fabworxoffroad.com/3652-straight-axle-conversion/

i know i would need to rebuild the front axle with a locker and 4.56 gears, but will that allow my stock trans case to hook up? or would it be better/stronger to use a different trans case? what all else do i need up front? and to fit 35s i need a 6" lift, which means i need another 2 inches. could i block the leaf springs in the front since it looks like this swaps it to a leaf front suspension?

then out back, i need to swap to a 14bold full float? whatever that is... lol
im looking at a detroit locker in the back and an ARB air locker in the front...how will that do for daily driving?
also, for the rear, 6" blocks? i think thats what the ProComp 6" lift for these hoes comes with...

ive never taken anything like this on, but i would love for this to get done and done right. got a good buddy of mine willing to help. he will have NO trouble with this. if he can figure out how to put a 5.0HO in a nissan 240, this should be a snap! haha

True but you can do a lot of wheeling with ifs. How do the 3.73 and 37s do in the city?

Mine does fine I'm not drag racing :) I will say my last 2 door tahoe was faster then my accord but I never floored it or used any of that speed my current Yukon with 37"s and 3.73 is just a bit slower then my accord but again I rarely get it over half throttle

how does it do offroad? is that enough gear to sling those 37s?

more then enough i do have a 454 in it though 5.7 would be fine in 4Lo off road

yeah...that helps! not enough gear to turn the tires, but enough raw power to make them turn whether they like it or not! haha stupid question, but how is that 454 on fuel? cant be THAT much worse than the 350? i get 11-12 now...

As stated sway bar bushings , but other than that you have just about everything covered with that big kit up there , I don't remember if this was on there but Definitly you ball joints they will stress with the new tires , I am very happy to see you rebuilding your Suspension Trust me it will make your Lift all the more better when completed. Most guys just slap a lift with old worn out suspension parts and wonder why their ride sucks and they are replacing parts a few months later

Thats what I did. I just slapped blocks in and cranked the keys. Well I broke a shock now. So im putting all new rancho RS5000s under it.

It's so bad 7-9mpg highway lol I'm actually in the process of swapping in a 6bt/nv4500 now because I really want to daily drive my Yukon and "town" is 50mi away I just can't afford the gas

Most heavy duty obs suburban 2500 came with the 14b ff

You can get lift built into your springs when you SAS so you won't need blocks

You'll be happy you skipped the ifs lift "buy once cry once"

There's a thread right now about lockers over at fullsizechevy in the off-road section

As far as losing ground clearance you can make that back up with bigger tires that look better anyway :)

Dang. I didn't think our trucks would hold a 6bt. That's what I really want in mine. Good ole 12v yeah. But I'll need 6" to clear 35s, can I order that built in, or would I need to add lift? Most kits I see are showing 4" lift.

only problem i have with the body lift is i found out i cant do a ranch hand front bumper with a body lift. not and it take any kind of impact at least... and for the price of a Procomp 4" lift i might as well spend the extra couple hundred and do the 6...

although that does make me want to spend the 300 on the body lift and do my 35s then save up for the 6" lift...
