HI all,

I have done plenty of searches, and realize my AC compressor is on the way out. I have the ticking sound that is getting pretty bad.

A local shop quoted me $1200 for the job. $579 for the compressor, then labor and the other parts that need to be replaced to do the job right.

I am not going to do it myself.. Just wanted to see if anyone has had it done significantly cheaper by a shop, or if this price sounds right.

depends on what parts they are using. and how much they are charging for labor. i guess for 579 that compressor is a new one. is it acdelco or 4seasons? are they changing the reciever/drier and orrifice tube?

Yeah, they said all that should be done so the warrenty on the new part is valid. Does that sound right, or an upsell on the job.

Mine is doing the same thing. Clacking so bad that it broke the tensioner. I been thru three tensioners now, all 3 broke. I went to two shops yesterday. One said about 1100-1200$, the other one said it will be somewhere between 1000 and 1400. I can't afford that right now, so I will have to learn how to do it myself. Rockauto has a brand new AC Delco compressor for 300$. The drier and orifice tube together are less than 60$. And then I will have to pay to have the freon drained and refilled again when I am done. If I can find a shop willing to drain it then refill it after I install the parts then that's what I will do. I am guessing it should be between 5 and 6 hundred if I do it myself.

The local shop charged me $830. that was for 2 pulleys, 2 belts, a/c compressor and freon.

My Ac went out in 9/09 on my 02 Yukon. Total repair bill $1547 for compressor, accumulator, orifice tube, high pressure switch, and new refrigerant and oil, including labor. Been working great ever since then. In Phoenix we use the AC alot so I figure getting seven years out of the original system was good. It never leaked refrigerant and was always cold until the day it stopped working. So I guess I 'm set for another 7 years.

Should I run it to failure? It pumps really cold, and I don't hear it inside. Will it just quit, or cost more because I shreded something?

Will I be out of comission on the road if it blows?

Just trying to figure out if I should just do it this weekend, or ride it till it's dead.. Looking for a few opinions..

Finally a price that makes me feel like I didn't get screwed over last month. I went through 2 tensiors before the compressor finally went out back in october. I paid around $1500+. I was beginning to think I got really screwed. However, three different shops basically quoted me the same price.
