As you can remember my infamous "loose rockers thread" I finally found time today to do proper adjustments. I only did this because I noticed a lot of ticking in extremely cold weather.

I did the adjustments with the engine running. I drove the truck first and got it to operating temp. I backed the nut loose until I heard clacking then slowly tightened until the noise went away. I also used my thumb to lightly press on the rocker to confirm no lash. Then I tightened the nut another 1/2 turn and done.

Question- Since I eyeballed the turning a half turn with my ratchet will it matter ? Each rocker nut might be slightly off compared to the others. Does it matter?

Now I also have a check engine light after everything is done. I bet it's from all the sensors I had disconnected to get the valve cover off. I had the intake off because obviously I can't do anything with that in the way. So I had the maff sensor unpugged and the IAT sensor.

I disconnected the both the neg and positive cables for like 5+ mins before I put everything together. I will take the battery cables off again for longer and see if the check engine light goes away.

Otherwise the engine seems to run real good and it's quieter now. No misses or strange noises. I pulled the throttle and listened for weird noises nothing just the loud fan noise.

p.s. it was 52 degrees today so I don't know if the cold ticking is gone. It's supposed to be real cold in a couple days. 50s again tomorrow.

Adjustments are made with engine shut down not running. I suggest you start over and do it again.

Adjustments can be done running and it's done all the time. I've had ASE certified GM mechanics tell me this too. It's also common knowledge all over the internet.

I appreciate your knowledge and you seem to know your stuff but this I disagree with. You can do this with the engine off or running.

Here is a link scroll down to almost the bottom and they tell you how to do it with the engine running.

And the internet is never wrong? Like Comet said, it needs to be off.
As far as the "ASE" mechanics, they would never touch my engine.
Brand new crate engines are built everyday, do they adjust them hot? No, they put them together, adjust them cold, and there done.

And Comet can't be wrong? he is on the internet too. I read the procedure for doing it with the engine on in about 10+ different websites. I also read that GM recommends you do it running. When you are rebuilding or changing out a cam that is a different story you do it with the engine off. An engine that hasn't been touched you can do it running. I was doing this on my stock engine that hasn't been modified or taken apart.

Instructions are from the factory service manuals so tell gem engineering that they were wrong for so many years and that they did not notice it. Show me where gm says to do it with the engine running. Btw your website link is saying to ignore others and books and listen tho them. Also says accurate way is with engine off but it has been done running. Is the running version accurate. Just do it as describe by the manufacturer of the vehicle or engine maker. I personally don't want oil splashing all over because I could not find splash guards at the local parts store.

I have read probably 20+ forums and websites and 50+ posts from people saying they do it running. Again this is not a fresh built motor or a cam swap. The initial preload was done at the factory I'm just doing an adjustment.

Anyway I didn't ask how adjustments are done. I will go around to the parts store and pull the codes.
