Hi everyone. My 2009 Yukon XL 103k w/ 5.3 flex and 6 speed has been consuming oil for the past 20k. I just checked it with 30% oil life left and it was down 2-1/2 qts. It does not smoke or leak oil. Would AFM consume this much? It is driven around town 90% of the time. I do not plan on any performance mods, but would like to disable the AFM and get any tunable power out of it Im in SC and would like to know if anyone could recommend a tuner. I really do not want spend $500 for a Blackbear tune.
Thanks

Many thread on this already.

Basically you should start with a Left side valve cover and go from there.

They changed the lifters and valve cover designs and a couple of other things in 2011.

If you have gone a long time with it like this already it may have gunked up the rings and hard to turn it back from that point.

Judging by the way my oil life indicator goes, 30% remaining life is a relatively considerable amount of mileage when compared to the usual 3-5K oil change intervals. If I let mine run down to 30%, the oil would probably have about 8K miles on it, if not more.

Especially if you run conventional, I'd expect some of that oil loss to be due to the oil being broken down and burnt off.

On the other hand, there is a sizable (probably bigger) chance that the loss is a result of the AFM "slow death". If it were me, I'd delete the AFM system mechanically and electronically ASAP. It would be cheaper to do this (and give you a great opportunity to get more power from a custom cam) ow rather than let it finish off your motor while you're way out somewhere on a family vacation.

Any threads on here showing how to delete ATM?

You'd need to purchase a tune and have the tuner disable the Afm. There is another device out there called a Range. It plugs into your dlc and as long as it plugged in, renders the Afm inactive. But for a hundred more, you can have someone tune your truck and make it really come alive

@4myfreedom

Above info correct. I have a Black Bear tune on my 06 Tahoe and I have the Range AFM Disable device on my 13 Suburban.

Price options depend on in-person or remote tune. Check site for info. I had an in-person tune when they were near me.

Cost is approx. $200. Shop around, sometimes a few dollars off. Simplest plug and play right into your OBS-II port under the steering wheel. No more V4 mode, all the time V8 mode. Don't want it perhaps for a long road trip for better MPG, unplug it. I have low miles to start with, so I decided to just tune it out from the start and not hopefully be hassled with this issue later on down the track.

I have full write ups in both my build threads about each. Any more questions, just ask.

Blackbear tune will make your truck come alive. Seriously should consider it. I have multiple times for 87 and 93 octane for 17' tires and 22' tires before I supercharged. I also had different trans tunes for sport mode and one for tow and hauling
