Hi all, first post.
I bought a low milage, well maintained, original owner 2002 Tahoe LT with a factory non-Bose, factory amp and sub. I removed all the OnStar equipment, factory HU, amp and sub. I also removed the factory tape deck and console audio controls. I installed a Sony AX4000 HU, Kicker speakers and sub, connecting the HU to the stereo harness with the Metra pigtail. I then jumped the wire harness from the console audio controls so the speakers had output. Everything working just fine but I just wasn’t happy with the sound from the new HU and the factory amp, so…I decided to remove the factory amp and install a Kenwood X802-5 amp. I also ran new speaker wires throughout from speakers to the new amp (which was time consuming). One of the things I did during this process was cut and remove a portion of the harness that runs to the original stereo controls in the back of the console, thinking that all this harness is doing is allowing the control of the original HU which is also tied into the removed factory amp. I cut the harness close to the dash, taped it up and tied the rest of the minimal slack up under the dash.
When I went to reconnect the Sony HU to the stereo harness with the Metra pigtail, I was no longer getting any power etc to the HU. So checking the harness plug, I had power from the yellow wire but I no longer had ground, no illumination and no power from the acc wire. I could not figure out why I lost ground, ill and acc hot. Then I thought about the harness I cut that ran to the factory console control, but I just figured that harness was theoretically dead anyways once I removed the factory HU and amp. Was I wrong in thinking that? Did cutting this harness affect the loss of stereo harness power etc?
So, I decided to just run new dedicated (fused) HU power, ground, acc power and illumination, which I pulled from the MBEC on the firewall under the drivers side. All is good now but I of course no longer have RAP for the stereo & amp. I can live with that but I may attempt to get RAP back in the future, if I feel I miss the stereo staying on for that 10 min after I turn the car off.
So the main question I have is, what did I mess up by cutting the console stereo control harness? And did that affect the loss of ground, illumination and the acc power? Does anyone have any thoughts or input on this?
Thanks for the time,
Jim
