anyone have any experience with the elm327

anyone have any experience with the elm327 device or the mobile obd2 apps
i have a nokia lumia windows 8 phone and i bought an elm327 the other day
most people use torque for andriod phones but windows 8 has a different app called obddoctor wich is pretty good so far
but im trying to figure out how to turn on stuff like the purge valve solenoid and vent valve solenoid to see if either one is bad i know its possible on the more expenisive scantools

I use Torque with my ELM but it doesnt allow actuation functions. I tried to download some other apps, but the only ones that support diagnostic commands like those, require the use of specific hardware from their specific company, sadly. LAUNCH has a device reasonably priced but their software is a bit on the cheaper end in quality.
