My beloved Yukon has been giving me trouble lately. I posted a thread 1-2weeks ago about my transmission acting up, and it seems that a damaged sunshell is the likely culprit. So I'm in the market for a new transmission.

But to make it worse... the weather is the coldest its been all year and the heater went out so its been cold as balls in the cabin of my truck and defogging the windshield has been a bit of a challenge. I love this truck though so even if it completely fails, I won't get rid of it. I'd spend the money to replace or rebuild the whole drivetrain if I had to.

Wait... there's more.... So as of the last 1 1/2 weeks, my truck has been running much hotter than usual. It never usually rises past the 1/4 mark on the gauge, and maybe 1 or 2 ticks past in stop and go heavy traffic, which is negligable. Lately it rises to the 1/2 way mark or 3/4 mark when I'm stopped, sometimes even getting dangerously close to the redzone. It runs at normal temperature at cruising speeds and highway speeds. Basically as long as I'm moving it will stay right where it should be. I've noticed that the way I apply any gas seems to affect how quickly my temps drop back to normal. The engine fan seems to work properly and there's no obvious play in the fan clutch. I checked on my lunch break for any leaks and the only spot that may have been leaking was the waterpump, but I'm not 100 percent sure. I don't have any white smoke out of the exhaust. Could this have anything to do with my transmission acting up? Could it just be the waterpump? (I could swear I heard the waterpump while I was sitting in traffic, making noises it didn't use to make) I doubt I have any head gasket problems, but I could always check that with a kit to be sure. Any ideas, or step in the right direction?

Thanks

ever change the thermostat? still full of coolant? when its running hot is the top radiator hose hot?

sounds exactly like what my camaro does, but its the E-fans on it not turning on at the correct time (or ever sometimes) could be the fan clutch is failing even if its not got play in it. had to replace the one on the tahoe as it was making noise heated up and still felt pretty solid when the truck was cooled off.

did the heater motor go out or the valve on the firewall or the core?

Heater doesn't work... engine running hot...sounds like you are way low on coolant.

yep id change out the thermostat and flush the coolant. better not run it much longer, having air in the system with DEFF burn up your gaskets and cause waayyy more problems then what you need right now.

Well, more specifically, the heater motor went out. Should be any easy fix, but haven't had the time. With the HVAC unit on the hot setting I'm getting hot air in. I'm not low on coolant at all (Naturally, that's the first thing I checked:D). I'll inspect the upper radiator hose while its running and check the temperature. I'll inspect the thermostat as well. I haven't replaced it in my ownership, but it was supposedly replaced about 2 years ago. Wouldn't hurt to just replace it anyways, since its cheap and easy. Anyways I'll check all that crap out and report back. Thanks for the input guys. Of course more info is always appreciated.

And I'll probably replace the fan clutch too while I'm at it (couldn't hurt either)

Ahhhh. Now were getting somewhere. By heater motor I assume you mean the fan motor. Sunlitcomet posted the remove/replace procedure somewhere here recently. A quick search should find it.

Overheat- I would start with the thermostat first and see where that gets you. As for the fan, I have owned every model year of the 2 door since the new body style and have never heard of these being a problem. But that is just me.
No use spending money when you don't have to.

Yeah, oldsalt, the fan/blower motor is what I meant. Its been cold as shit lately too. I'll have to find the install/removal procedure you mentioned that sunlitcomet posted. I could probably figure it out myself, but it never hurts to RTFM :). So yeah, I'll start with the thermostat and take it from there. And, I agree with you on not spending money when you don't have to. But it is a pretty cheap part and fairly easy to install with the right tools. I guess I'll wait and see.

Well, I checked my upper radiator hose and it was fairly cool and obviously not flowing any coolant even though it should have been at that point, given the temperature. Seems like the thermostat is not doing its job properly and appears to be the culprit. I can get the truck to cool down even at a dead stop in neutral by lightly blipping the throttle a couple times (which seems to force the thermostat to open and flow coolant). So I'm going to run to the parts store during my lunch break, purchase a new thermostat and some coolant, and install the damn thing after work (with a work lamp in the dark...) Anyways, I'll report back with the results.

Oh, thanks for that link oldsalt, and thanks everyone for the input so far.
