Ive got some speakers that are blown and am going to replace all of them with rockford fosgates 6 1/2s and 1 inch tweeters. Basically replace everything that is already there. This is an '01 hoe with factory sub, no bose. Ive already replaced the sub when that went out with a polk audio 8. My question is - Is everything powered off the HU? If not where is the amp and would this just be for the sub? If i wanted a little more punch could i replace just the amp?.....probably replacing the Hu later on down the road, bigger tires first...is this a good starting point?

The factory amp is behind and above the glovebox. It powers all the speakers and the sub.
A lot of people replace the stock woofer with a better one, and add a dedicated amp for the sub.
I plan on doing that if I ever have the damn time. I have a Kicker 8 inch sub and a Autotek amp been sitting in my closet for about two years now. :okay2:

Yup, if you want better, you gotta do a better driver and another amp. 100 watts in a shallow mount sub with a sealed box only goes so far.

Got all the speakers replaced over the weekend. Sounds good. better than busted ones....so if I wanted to be able to get more bass out of the system could I add just an amp for the sub and bypass the factory amp. I read there is a adapter to bypass the amp completely but this cuts out the d-pillars and sub. Could I just bypass the factory amp for the sub only and keep the d-pillars functional? Or would this not even be worth it retaining the factory box with an 8 inch sub to acheive more bass?

If you want more bass, you're gonna wanna disconnect the factory sub and add a different sub all together. You can replace the factory sub with a different one and add an amp, but it will only be a marginal gain.

Well Ive just been hooked on upgrading the audio now, in some form or another. Heres what I was thinking...

Option 1: What about adding a seperate loaded enclosure and amp in the cargo area and running this simultaneously with the factory sub. Has anyone done this? This way I could just disconnect the enclosure if I needed to carry cargo or go on a road trip but still maintain some bass. To do this would I just tap off the factory sub signal before the factory amp and run that to the aftermarket amp and enclosure? Is this even possible or is this just a stupid idea?...If it is does anyone know what wires are the sub signal going to the amp behind the glovebox?

Option 2: Just adding a mono amp for the factory sub (its cheaper, but im not sure if it will be what I want sound wise)

In addition to is a bad idea. There is phasing, possible time delay, and frequency overlap to deal with that may just not sound great. Besides that, you may not even be able to hear the factory one so there would be no audible gain.

Adding an amp to the factory sub will probably lead to you replacing the sub shortly after. It's not a high power handling sub.

I think im leaning towards just adding an amp for the sub now, maybe putting an enclosure and larger sub later. Ive got a PolkAudio DB840DVC in there right now. Could I just run the signal from where the subwoofer is and run it to the high side, or take the signal and bypass the amp and run it to the low level signal on the amp? Would I just tap off the rear low level wires from the HU is there even a preamp signal for the sub before it runs into the amp?

Unless your amp has high level inputs, you'd have to convert it to low level, and you'll want to do that at the factory amp input signal. There are no preamps on the factory HU.

Alright. Thanks for helping me out on this. What would you reccomend for a mono amp that i could use for my 8" that i would upgrade later on to maybe a 10 or 12 enclosure. I was looking at either soundstream pn1.450d or rockford fosgate pbr300x1
