This is not a debate about whether or not the AWD is a good design or sufficient.
Plenty of Denali and Escalade owners are less than satisfied with the performance and design of the AWD in 07 and later trucks. FACT.
These trucks (SUV's) equipped with the BW 4485 transfer case have an open differential in the transfer case and will allow single axle biased operation under slippery conditions ( RWD) The system is designed to incorporate brake application through the stabilitrak system to add resistance to the spinning tires, thus transferring a portion of torque to the non spinning tires. This system does not work well in slippery conditions especially in reverse.
Talk on several forums of swapping the NVG149 transfer case from earlier AWD models has been started but I have yet to see a successful swap.
Anyone?
Another option would be to modify the BW4485 transfer case to replace the planetary differential with either a true all time 4wd from something like a V8 jeep grand cherokee (also BW) or possibly add or swap in a viscous coupler similar to what was in the old Denali T-case (NVG149) I could imagine a limited slip clutch pack being added in place of the planetary set... All of these options would still allow normal operation of the electronic systems. Someone has had to figure something out by now right???
