Back up light bulb

Gang,
Had a backup light go out. Pulled it out, says it's a 3057. Strange, that's a 2-filament bulb...

So I picked up another 3057, and everything's good now.

But after getting home, I checked online and at least a couple sites (Osram Sylv and Phillips) show that OEM spec calls for a 3156, which is a single filament bulb as I'd expect.

I wonder if I may have replaced the bulb once before with an incorrect one or if maybe some of these came from the factory with a 3057 for whatever reason (maybe they were out of 3156s that day)?

Any idea? Doesn't seem to be hurting anything, but if the filament that's used in this 3057 puts out less lumens than a 3156, I just threw a little money away...

ahh, sorry mis-read...sounds like at one time someone used a 3057 as a quick fix maybe?

I'm the first and only owner, so I'd have no one ta blame but myself But I'm usually pretty **** about replacing that kind of stuff with like items, so that's why it struck me as odd.

A 3156 is a 27 watt bulb. A 3057 is a dual filament bulb, and the brighter filament is usually about 26 or 27 watts. So its basically the same bulb, but with an extra filament that will never get used. So its quite possible that the factory suffed a 3057 in there if they ran out of 3156 bulbs. They put the 3057 in the tail/brake lights so I'm sure they had plenty of them around.

it's worth noting there is a 50w halogen bulb with the 1100 series or 3000 series base. Had that in my 97 silve and will soon put it in the 98 tahoe.

Nice! That doesn't get too hot in there if the lights on for more than a few seconds? I've read about some putting an LED cluster in the back up light slot but I've also read a lot of disappointing results from LEDs so I haven't bothered checking into it.

It's true. LED "bulbs" simply do not have enough output to compare with incandecent or halogen bulbs. LED bulbs work best when used in an Array or specialized reflector.
