Bad u joint or bad slip yoke?

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I did a search and couldn't find anything.

Here's the problem. When accelerating and sometimes decelerating, there is a thumping/clicking noise coming from under the truck. It progressively gets faster with speed and of course slows down when stopping. I've jacked up the truck and checked for play in the u joints, but they seem to be ok, from what I can tell anyway. But the slip yoke has quit a bit of play up and down. I don't know if this is normal or not, I'm assuming it's not since I tried the packing it with grease trick and it didn't help. Has anybody else run into this problem?

whatever became of this? I have the same problem and have been told it's the t-case by one shop and another shop said it may be the slip yoke.

i had a loud clank when i was under heavy acceleration and then braking. Thought it was the u-joints, but ended up needing to have some $50/tube grease added into the the yoke (IIRC) and that solved the problem. Apparently it had alot of play as well...

It's a common problem that the "yank or yoke" on the trucks are bad. I realized that mine was bad when I would be sitting at the light, and it felt like someone bumped into the back of my truck.

I had mine replaced about 3 weeks ago and they covered it under the factory warranty. My service guy told me that it's very common and that he see them come in all the time. They have re-designed it so you will not have the same problem down the road.

Yep same thing happened with mine but it was not clicking, it was just doing what Keanen described aboved me. Covered under factory warranty in December of 2008.

I think the OP is having a different problem then what you guys are stating.

I'm having the same problem as the OP...that is, a squealing noise from the back when accelerating and sometimes decelerating that increases in speed/noise level as you give it gas. Note: Not a bump at a stop or clunk while braking, but a squealing while moving.

Anyone else have this or have a solution for it?

Had u joints replaced on mine. The one was shot. And later the drive shaft. It was the cause of highway speed vibrations.

Anyone know the procedure to take out the slip yoke, and change it? I get the infamous "ding" when I shift from park to drive/reverse/etc. If it's not too difficult, I'd like to do it myself, as I see this part is ~ $200.
Also....this is a 4 wheel drive, so are there 1 or 2 of these slip-yokes?

Yes, there are two yokes.

No, it is not difficult.

Yes, you can do it yourself.

Before replacing either yoke you need to get under the truck and grab ahold of your drive shafts right at the U-joints. Try to move them back and fourth, you are checking for any play at all. If you have play in the joints you will need to replace the joint itself.

Where your driveshafts enter your Tcase is where it can be difficult to feel for play. You want to do the same thing with the shaft. However, this time you will be grabbing the yoke and moving IT back and fourth. If it wiggles you have a worn bushing inside the transfer case. This can be caused from a poor U-joint as the rotation of your driveshaft(s) would not be a perfect circular rotation, I suppose it would be oblong.

I'm not mechanic, just throwing it out there.

Anyone support this?
