Im installing my drop spindles, i got the ball joints loose. Ive been following a couple threads on gmfs and another site, but anyway, says to loosen the nuts then give a good whack and should come loose. Well they did, but now i cant get the nut off. It turns with the bolt attached to the ball joint. (does that make sense?)

basically i cant get the nut off the ball joint, b/c it just keeps spinning. Any ideas how to get tension on it maybe, so that i can get it off.

any help greatly appreciated, i have gave up today on it. Will start fresh in the am, just looking for some ideas over nite.

thanks

Could use PB Blaster (breaks surface tension like spinning bolts)?
Normally people loosen the ball joint nut while the wheels are still on and the weight of the SUV on the ball joints, just stops them from spinning as much.

huh.. well i never saw that about doing it w/ the wheels on still. All of the write ups i have saved, seen have them off. Did just fine w/ the other side, just on this side, thought i had them loose enough when i broke them loose. Guess not.

Never heard of PB blaster. I got the bottom joint off, just need the top nut off now.

The nut is spinning cuz the ball joint is junk now. it happened to me.
You are going to have to replace it anyway so two ways I know of is to take a pry bar add pressure to the upper control arm and try an impact if you have one, or you can try to use vise grips hold the stud while trying the nut.

I hope this helps..

AsK NORCALSS he'll confirm that. I did not mean take the bolt all the way off with the wheels on, just loosen it a fair amount.
Search PB Blaster and you'll find some info on it.

Well i did just what you said, i got some vice grips and held on to the bolt and it worked fine. It was just that top ball joint nut. But for it being bad, my mechanic friend they are suppose to do that. They are (forgot the word) but they have a grove they are suppose to go in, thats why when you loosen it, it spins. I dont know, but i cant see the ball joints a one time use on all 4. upper and lower. But i dont know..

thanks for the help.

Ok, well i got it off. Used swtz adivce, well what i finally thought about doing. For loosen it, just from what i just did, you have to loosen it almost all the way. Otherwise it just spins....

Im no expert, but glad i can say i did it myself.

thanks guys for you help
