Yes, time and temps can play havoc with batteries at times. Main thing is to keep it clean and all connections clean and tight.

the california heat kills batterys so I figured anything would help, plus I drive like smokey and the bandit a lot so it gets hot under the hood.

Living in Florida.... ( BTW, I will be living in Palm Beach at the end of this month).......
Batteries rarely last 3 years ( at full efficiently )...... No need for a long-lasting high-end battery.
As for a heat shield around a battery...... IMO, adding a wrap to the battery may actually hold heat inside it??
That battery can cool off faster on it's own?? If you want to play in your garage, maybe fabricate an air duct at it?
