I am wondering the average life of a standard battery. I replaced mine when I did the new motor...close to 5 years or so now. It's a little slow to start (it also just sits these days) but I noticed the doors unlock slowly too whenthe truck isn't running.

I'm thinking the battery is on teh way out. Anyone agree?

Absolutely. 3-5 years is about it for the premium batteries I buy.

I remember years ago (when dinosaurs still roamed the earth) limping along on old weak batteries long enough to save up to buy a new one, but that was before electric fuel pumps, fuel, transmission, and ignition computers and all the other happy electrics that come to life as soon as the switch turns to "on".

I generally don't get any real warnings these days. If I get one slow start, my next stop is the battery store.

unknown at this time.
Bowtie, giving your climate and the five years you have gotten from it you have done very well. Perhaps get your self get your self a new one. But you did say it is not driven much so get your self a permanent mount battery maintainer as well. Plug in when not in use for several days. I actually recommend doing that and a new battery at the same time. However the maintainer might give you old battery some more life for little while longer if you find that after your slow starts and some driving it has starting has improved the next day while still on the same battery under the same environment.

I have teh battery tender from the cycle I just sold that should work. I am starting a new home for the red truck now, extending the driveway and adding a car port I think.

We are geting ready for another vehicle......to be continued

I ran a towing company for a few years and found 3-5 is the average for most batteries, depending on usage of course. I have gotten as much as 7 from an OEM and as little as 14months from a "Optima".

I have 2 Blue tops in my boat. Just finished the 7th season with them, and no concerns. My wife is on her 8th year with a OEM battery in her Beetle Convertible. I plan to replace this before the end of the year, as it's starting is getting a little slow.

When your battery gets low, generally it increases the load on the Alternator, decreasing the Alt life as well. They work off each other so it's in your best interest to replace it before it starts hurting another component. Small price to pay for security. Broken out over 3-5 years, (the life of the battery), it' could literally be less than a penny a day.

Good luck.
