Oh my g-d, that's terrible.
I have been using my parking brake for years in every vehicle I've owned, its just habit. Regardless whether on flat or inclined surface. I would never NOT use it especially working under it. That's just crazy.
Like someone else said to always chock the wheels to.
A friend of mine had a very bad experience under a vehicle where the jacks gave way on uneven surface. He was lucky to make it out, granted he got knocked out and had a nice bump and gouge taken out of his forehead but, he's alive.
Whenever I work under my Tahoe, not only do I chock the wheels but I also use large 10x10 or 12x12 blocks that I stack under the frame incase the jacks fail. rather be safe than sorry.
