06 would be the year of choice. but 03-04-05 are fine also there basically all the same minus a few minor features. im pretty sure in 06 they got rid of the instant economy feature in the dash and maybe another feature or 2 but thats really it. 05-06 had touch screen navs while 04s had push button with a smaller screen and i know in 03 they did not come with nav. i know in 03 the fueling system changed from inline to intank and return to returnless for the 6.0 lq9. mechanically keep an eye on the front diff when you go to check the truck out thats a definite weak point for gm AWD trucks. also make sure the trans shifts good in all situations. WOT, low and mid throttle, hard downshifts, sudden high rpm let offs. also check and make sure the ass warmers work both of my trucks have had the elements burn out. and one more thing to check is with the dual climate control the driver door blend actuator. it is what controls the temperature change from driver to passenger and if that goes you cant change your temp. other than that everything should be great

01-02 had the best awd tcase gm ever put in a 1/2 ton: the nvg-149 (same case in the silvy ss trucks). Aside from the disastrous interiors, which aren't too bad on the denali trucks, the 01-02 had the cabin air filters, underhood light, and '02 was the first year of rear heated seats. But the best part of an 01-02 besides the price is...

My '01 has rear heated seats. Maybe they were an option and not standard.

Cassette deck is nice, it makes the iPod hookup very easy through a tape deck adapter. Much better than an FM transmitter.

But yes, the interior is very lame compared to the '03+ models. No dual zone climate control up front, the SIC is down by the center console instead of in the gauge cluster, and they are overall just "less nice" inside than the '03+ models were. I'd rather have an '05 than my '01, but my '01 is still better than the '00 Blazer I used to drive.

my 99 yukon denali had rear heated seats... and the denali and the SS Silverados have identical drivetrains. the NVG case was used all the way up to the nnbs trucks. the only difference is the engine LQ4 vs LQ9 which is like a 20 horse difference. and 01-02s have a few different engine components. i know they switched from cable to wire throttle bodies and if i remember correctly they have less power also

2002 was the first year of standard rear heated seats but the 03+ yukon denali trucks came with the borg-warner awd tcase that had the ******** abs tone ring input awd system and a low range. I think some of the 01s had cable TBs but the 02+ had electronic. I think about 2005 is when they switched to the LQ9 10:1 static compression compared to the 9.4:1 in the LQ4. To my knowledge the Silvy SS, 01-02 YD, and 01+ SD came with the NVG-149.
