Have an 08 Z71 4WD that has about 74k on it. A ball joint was going out and the shocks/struts were in need of replacement soon so I decided to go ahead and get a few things knocked out.

Ordered:
Bilstein 5100 front and back struts/shocks
MOOG Tie-Rods
MOOG UCAs

Got them installed at a local shop and aligned. A lot of people ask about the Bilsteins and how they ride. The best I can say is that they do a much better job of keeping the tire more firmly on the ground over rough pavement/off-road than the original Z71 equipment did. The ride itself is not at all more jarring or anything than the original Z71 stuff and the lateral control is also improved. Overall on the crappy South Texas roads here I would say it really improves driveablity and will lessen fatigue over a long haul because I don't have to fight the truck everytime it hits a bump that causes it to yaw and roll and make the steering jump all over the place. As for firmness or "jarring" I doubt my wife would notice a difference between the two.

As for how much this can be attested to new UCAs and tie rods in combination with the Bilsteins is unknown but overall I'd recommend all of the above. I briefly considered Cognito UCAs but considering I am stock with a level kit above the strut I didn't need that much down travel... not to mention the Moogs were about $160 vice $500+ for Cognito. As for the tie-rods, research suggested the Moogs were the best so I didn't really consider anything else. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the review! What was the total cost of parts and labor?
Also, do you have a lift or factory ride? I would like to get this same setup.

I got the Bilsteins online somewhere, I forget exactly where but it was around $350 for fronts and back. The tie rods and UCAs were from Rockauto and it was $180 or so. Install was done here in Texas and it was $300 including alignment.

A note about the install: make sure when you pick up the truck to look in the engine bay at the top of the strut. You'll see several bolts that mount the strut tower to the vehicle, but inside of that you'll see the top of the Bilstein strut which is a threaded rod. You should have a nut on it and it should NOT spin freely. Mine did because the installer didn't use a big enough washer and after about 100 miles it worked loose and was causing the strut to rattle around. Easy fix, but avoidable.

I had a 1.5" spacer leveling kit on the truck prior to this. I know Bilsteins are "ride height adjustable" but the shop advised me to leave the strut on the factory setting and continue to use the spacer. They have apparently seen instances of failure on the Bilstein when the ride-height adjuster was used and they felt more confident in the spacer. Hopefully this doesn't ignite a storm on here between which is a better level.

I have the 5100s and am switching my front end to all MOOG. I have heard nothing but good about both.

Does anyone have the part numbers for this. Searching RockAuto i get 3 different Moog UCA part numbers. Just curious which ones everyone went with.

Are all your UCA and tie rods bent, or bushings wore out? Just curious why you guys are changing these out?

Here are the part numbers from RockAuto I got:

MOOG ES800223 Tie Rods
MOOG RK80669 UCA
MOOG RK80670 UCA

The reason for the changeout for ME...
I had a bad balljoint on the passenger side. Since I was already getting new struts, the UCAs were being pulled, so I figured I'd do both since they were pulled apart. The same thinking was with the tie-rods in that I might was well knock them out while everything was taken apart. One disassembly and one alignment for all of the above to be completed.

Also, I'm sure I'm telling y'all what you already know, but the factory ball-joints are not serviceable/replaceable and you need to get an entirely new UCA.

I forgot to add: I had to call Rockauto re: the mulitple UCA options. Really there are only 2 instead of 3. The cheapest ones are there own deal and apparently are nearly* the same but don't have a lifetime warranty. The other two are the exact same part but they're changing out part numbers and the new part numbers come with a higher price.
