My truck should finally be here within the next two weeks. I ended up ordering a black on black Denali XL. The wheels I ordered were the 22" 7-spoke wheels with the chrome inserts. I decided to save the $2000+ and just paint or wrap the inserts black.

My question is about how to black out the truck. I am not planning on blacking out everything, I want to black out the grill, bezel along with the chrome around the fog lights. I also plan on blacking out the chrome strip down the door and the inserts on the wheels.

One customizing shop wants to paint everything and says vinyl looks cheap and won't last, the other shop will paint or wrap but says vinyl is better because it's cheaper, quicker and reversible. They also say vinyl will hold up just fine and not look cheap.

So, the question is, to vinyl or to paint?

1. Does vinyl look cheap v. paint?

2. How durable is the vinyl?

3. How much cost savings?

4. Would it be better to wrap some parts and paint others and why?

5. I will black out the inserts on the wheels, does the fact this work would be on the wheels make a difference?

If reversible and cheap is your goal then Plastidip with glossfier is easy to apply.

I dipped my Chrome Jeep grille.

Cheap is not the goal nor is reversibility. I like the idea of being able to reverse it if I want but it's not a requirement. I am afraid plastidip would look cheap and not durable enough. I certainly don't want to have to touch it up or redo it regularly.

Vinyl if done properly will look great + reversible if the look you thought you wanted isn't how it turns out.

I have a guy telling me that's the way to go with the wheels and a few other pieces like the grill and bezel. Thoughts?

He says I can do almost any design I want. I thought of a carbon fiber look for some of it even. May just stick to black or gun metal gray but my mind is all over the place.

It's cool if done right. Personally, I would never do carbon fiber dip unless it's on a fast car. IMO, it doesn't belong on an SUV unless you're actually doing to lose weight.

True. I'm really just looking for the best way to get the look I want. How would you compare hydro dip to painting, vinyl or plasti dipping?
