You'll be happy that you spent the money on new gears, especially if you're rolling 3.42s right now. I went from my stock 3.73 to 4.56 and it made a HUGE difference.
Good luck on the rebuild. It's no fun when parts break. Mine's sitting in the garage right now waiting for the new gears to arrive.

for those of you that are running higher ratios like 4.10 and 4.56. what kind of rev's are you turning at highway speeds? I have stock 3.73 and when I do my build wouldnt mind beefing up the rear end ratio, but really don't want to be turning something like 3k at 75..lol

Im getting the gears next week just wanted to know if i could use my jet chip 4 to set up the gears only cause i really dont wanna go back to the guys that tuned my truck they r really shady and suck at customer service...

Man its a B**** not being able to drive my truck, i had to rebuid the whole trans cause everything was either melted/ got to hot, chipped or was broken... The parts with a new stall cost me $1240 and all the parts are rated at 800hp. Im getting it back today, hopefully nothing goes wrong...

gears will make it a less strain on the tranny. 4.30 is the perfect gear IMO. Im thinking of steeping up to those for added mpg and I run 3.73s. Ive researched and even spinning at a higher rpm, will equate to better mileage. As long as the engine is in the sweet spot where the cam makes power in relation to vacuum.

If the trans is dead like you said, get a 80e its a no brainier, a junkyard 80e will hold 800hp. Just get a salvage and drop a 3k stall into it, and call it good. What I would do when the time comes to it.
