Blown Rear End, No Drive Now?

Okay guys so I have a question. I managed to grenade my rear end tonight. The weird thing that I can't figure out is, my Drive gear seems to have somehow gone with it?

To be clear, the vehicle still moves, the rear end is just in really rough shape. I was actually able to limp it back to the shop. That being said, the only gears that work from a dead stop are R, 1, and 2. However, if I use 1 and 2 to get it moving, then once rolling, I can feel it shift into 3rd once I manually move it to 3rd, and then I can again feel a shift once I move it into drive. It's as if the 3rd and Drive gears work just fine once the vehicle is moving. But again, from a dead stop I have nothing. Any idea what this could be? I'm praying that the rear end didn't somehow take the transmission with it. It should be noted that when it's going down the road and it's in drive it performs perfectly fine. No slip, smooth shifts.

I know some rear ends in fbodies that have taken out the 4l60e ,when they've blown their rear ends.

How are you moving at all if the rear is gone? Also what were the circumstances under which it was damaged?

agree with Erik— I think you broke your diff and trans one immediately after the other

If you can move you didn't break your diff. Transmission has an output shaft that goes to a driveline to your diff, your diff has gears in it that rotate your wheels.

Jack up the rear end and try and spin your wheels by hand. Do they move? Next, put the transmission in neutral and try and do the same test. Finally put the transmission in gear and push on the gas pedal and visually inspect if the wheels are moving. Wheels should spin if the transmission is powering the diff. Make sure your in 2wd. Good luck.

Didn’t even think to make this clear. But the rear end is definitely gone. I’ve pulled the cover and one of the spider gears is completely gone. I’m talking like chunks in the bottom of the casing. I honestly couldn’t tell you how it’s still pulling but it still moves. I guess there’s enough of whatever left to keep it moving. So the rear end pulls in 1st and 2nd from a dead stop. Once rolling, it will pull in Drive just fine. However, if I am in 4 low it pulls from a dead stop in Drive. I should also mention I have no front driveshaft in at the moment.

I’m thinking maybe it got the transfer case when the rear end went?

Not trying to sound like a dick, but fix the rear end first and then go from there. Sounds like a nightmare to troubleshoot if you don't even know what's working and what's not.

If it was mine I would fix the rear end for around $300 and a days worth of work and then go from there.

That’s the plan man. Going to get a rear end tomorrow morning. Just wanted to see if anybody knew anything obvious that I didn’t.

Wish you luck and I hope its just the rear end! Tranny work gets expensive.
