Depends on if youre going to OC.
At stock speeds theyre pretty close performance wise, they trade blows pretty evenly.
However, both oc to about 4ghz fairly easily, and at that point the i5 generally wins as its more efficient clock for clock.
Even then it depends on what you want to do, core i series cpus are very, very good at number crunching, so things like FAH and video encoding/decoding and other extremely CPU hungry tasks are dominated by them.
AMD cpus tend to work better for gaming, that AMD cpu trades blows with the i7 920 in games.
Its pretty much a personal preference thing, although in many cases you would get a larger game performance difference saving 30 on the cpu to spend 30 more on the GPU.
