Hi,

I'm in search of new drain/fill plug for my NP246 transfer case since my start to be "rounded".

I've checked Merchant automotive since they have the kit I want but their website sucks once you're logged and display weird message everywhere over the screen.
Rockauto has two items. ONce is $7.86 the other is $56.79 !
What the hell such a difference. Is the Dorman made of Platinum?

Ebay is not a helper nor Amazon.
Since I don't know any international sellers, would you hgelp me give me some name and address?
I'm more into magnetic plugs right now.

Thanks.

You said you can't find a drain plug and then you say you found 2 at Rock Auto. If you want magnetic then search farther. The less expensive one is an AC Delco part number. Call the dealer and see if is magnetic. Maybe the Dorman one is magnetic and that is why is expensive. Go to Dorman site and locate with the Dorman number and see what the difference.

Almost forgot, guit whining!

Find an old socket that is a little smaller than the plug diameter and weld. Now you have a 3/8 drive plug with new life on the cheap.

How often are you pulling the plug on your transfer case?? I've had oil drain plugs last the lifetime of the car with out rounding and those are taken out at least x10 as often. Sounds like someone has been using the wrong size socket or wrench (I really hope it wasn't a cresent wrench), or just torqueing them way too much. I don't know if you have any auto parts stores like autozone around you but here they have a pretty wide variety of plugs. I'd take your rounded out plug in and try to match it up, they only cost a few bucks here.

the op is in France. He needs to go ahead and buy the RockAuto, he is lucky anyone will ship with all of the forwarding and duties involved.

Renault and Peugeot owners have to pay similar prices here in the US

Weld the socket on like suggested if you don't want to pay for freight

I'd still try matching one up from a parts store. Theres gotta be some kind of auto parts store in France. If you want to go the weld on route I'd weld a nut on it. If you weld a socket on it you'd be putting the weld (ie HEAT) on the very edge of the damaged plug and if you aren't a skilled welder you could very easily burn the edge off the plug or warp it. If you do either of those its not going to seat right and you'd end up with a leak. If you weld a nut on, you can focus your heat right in the middle of the plug where its thickest and least likely to damage the seating surface. You would be welding the middle of the nut to the plug. I've done this a few times to get broken bolts out of things. TIG works best but MIG will do in a pinch. One more option though highly unlikely since I doubt these trucks are very common over there, find a salvage yard and ask if they have any junk transfer cases you could snag a plug out of.
